Shorea balangeran: The Wonders of Peatland Trees

Shorea balangeran, is a significant species found in peat swamp forests primarily in Southeast Asia. This tropical hardwood tree is an integral component of its ecosystem, contributing to biodiversity and environmental stability.

Balangeran is valued for its pest-resistant wood, which is used in construction and furniture making. This type is often chosen for forest planting especially for peatland rehabilitation activities.

Balangeran has thick bark, so it can survive forest fires. This type naturally grows in peat swamp forests, so Balangeran easy to adapt in peatlands that are prone to forest and land fires. Besides that, Balangeran is also resistant to waterlogging, making it suitable for areas that often flood such as peatland. Balangeran helping mitigate climate change by storing carbon in its biomass and the surrounding peat. Its presence also supports various wildlife, offering habitat and sustenance for numerous species, including birds, mammals, and insects.

Despite its significance, Balangeran faces threats from deforestation, land conversion for agriculture, and climate change. Balangeran’s IUCN status is also Vulnerable (VU) since 2020, meaning that Balangeran is at high risk of extinction in the wild. Therefore, conservation efforts are essential to protect this species and its habitat, ensuring the sustainability of peat swamp ecosystems.
