Indonesia and the Republic of Korea Strengthen Strategic Forestry Cooperation

Seoul, Republic of Korea – 1 April 2026 – The Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Korea Forest Service (KFS) strengthened their long-standing partnership through the signing of two strategic cooperation agreements during the Korea–Indonesia High-level Bilateral Meeting on Forestry Cooperation held in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The agreements were signed by the Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Minister of the Korea Forest Service, marking a significant milestone in advancing bilateral cooperation in the forestry sector. The signing reflects the shared commitment of both governments to addressing global environmental challenges through sustainable forest management and enhanced institutional collaboration.

The cooperation covers a broad range of strategic areas, including sustainable forest management, forest and land fire prevention, suppression, and post-fire recovery, as well as the exchange of technology, expertise, and best practices. In addition, both countries agreed to strengthen human resource capacity through technical cooperation, knowledge sharing, and collaborative programs that support the development of forestry professionals.

The agreements also underscore the importance of strengthening preparedness for emerging environmental challenges, including the increasing risk of forest and land fires associated with climate variability such as the anticipated El Niño conditions. By combining technical expertise and institutional experience, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea aim to enhance resilience and improve the effectiveness of forest management in both countries.

The signing of these strategic agreements further reinforces the strong bilateral relationship between Indonesia and the Republic of Korea, which has continued to expand through various forestry cooperation initiatives over the years. The renewed commitment is expected to create broader opportunities for innovation, capacity development, and the implementation of sustainable forestry programs that generate long-term environmental and socio-economic benefits.

As a joint cooperation platform established by the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Korea Forest Service, the Korea–Indonesia Forest Cooperation Center (KIFC) will continue to support the implementation of these strategic commitments by facilitating collaborative projects, technical exchanges, and capacity-building initiatives in line with the priorities agreed upon by both governments.

Through this strengthened partnership, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea reaffirm their shared vision of promoting sustainable forest management, enhancing climate resilience, and fostering mutually beneficial cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of forest resources.
